Woodchester Mansion

 Saturday 30th October 2004

General Details

Woodchester Mansion is a gothic mansion built in the late 19th Century.

The mansion stands on the site of a much older building which was knocked down to make way for the new building.  The most unusual fact regarding the mansion is that the building work was never completed and no true reason has ever been discovered to find out why, many people put it down to the fact the owner of the time ran out of money; this does not explain however why the workman left in such a hurry that all the tools were left and are still housed inside the mansion to this day….

Equipment used by GPRG during the investigation:

E.M.F. Reader

Laser Thermometer

Digital Recording Device

Aerial Thermometer

Digital Camera

Analogue Dictaphones

2-way radios

Night Vision digital camcorder.

1st & 2nd Floor Corridors

Initial readings were taken with the E.M.F. meter and the thermometer:

E.M.F. Meter – Normal

Temperature 11.9°C

During our stay at the 1st Floor Corridor one member of my group had an overwhelming urge to cry although she could not explain why.

Due to the close proximity of the Chapel and Sacristy, noises could be heard from another group investigating this location, therefore my group decided to move up to the 2nd Floor Corridor.  Again meter readings were taken:

E.M.F. Meter – Normal

Temperature 15°C

During our vigil of this area many of the group felt very uncomfortable especially towards the north west aspect of the building.  The window at this part of the building kept being obscured, as if a shape was stood in front of the window, also the night vision camera had difficulty focusing here.  During our stay here an increase in temperature was recorded: Temperature 23°C

Although no-one in the group felt any physically warmer.

The final area to be investigated at this location was the spiral staircase between floors 1 and 2.  Again one member of the group felt very emotional to the point of having tears rolling down her face.  The temperature recorded on first entering the stairs was 26.5°C.  Within five minutes the temperature had dropped to 14°C, part of this fluctuation would be due to moving down through the building.  However, this could not explain the 12.5° drop in temperature

Chapel & Sacristy

Initial readings:

E.M.F. Meter – Normal

Temperature 12°C

We were joined at this pint by another member, who claimed he could sense a dark figure in the Sacristy and a lady up on the Chapel balcony, although no anomalous meter or temperature readings were noted in support of this, it was interesting information to be looked into.

Our guest then moved onto another area of the mansion as we carried on with our vigil.

No fluctuations were recorded, although at one point a member of the group did start to walk away from the area but could not explain why she wanted to get away.

It was at this point of the investigation that a loud bang followed by a scream was heard from another group investigating the 2nd Floor Corridor.  A lot of talk was going on with the 2-way radios and it was decided to meet back at the base room.

Base Room

It was discovered that whilst the group led by fellow G.P.R.G. member Craig Howley was investigating the 2nd Floor Corridor that most of the group felt uncomfortable, then on being joined by someone, this new member was said to be pushed by an unseen force and it was this that caused one of the members of the group to scream.

To investigate this more fully, it was decided to hold a group séance at the 2nd Floor Corridor.

Séance – 2nd Floor Corridor

The séance was led by G.P.R.G. member Craig Howley who began by performing a protection exercise.  Unfortunately due to personal reasons of an investigative nature the séance was cut short and it was decided to split back up into smaller groups and conduct vigils in other areas of the mansion.

The Cellar

Investigations in this area focused around the night vision recording equipment and with the use of a dictaphone.  It had previously been reported by other groups that E.V.P.’s had been recorded in this area.  For the first 40 minutes of the vigil no unusual events were noted.  We were joined by fellow G.P.R.G. members Colin Howley and John Crote as we moved to another area of the cellar.  It was at this point that we were told of other events which took place earlier in the evening – notably one of the group member ‘feeling’ a presence and feeling something push against him.  Whilst re-creating this event some very strange noises were picked up with the Dictaphone which were not heard at the time.  We were very encouraged with the results from the cellar

The Lakes

At this point of the investigation the group took a trip down to the lakes of Woodchester.  Some unexplained phenomenon had been reported from this area before which had been linked to the tragic accident experienced by the U.S. Military when they had used Woodchester as a training area.  A pontoon bridge had been erected spanning one of the lakes.  When the military took a tank full of U.S. solders across the pontoon, it collapsed taking the tank and all of its occupants to a watery grave.

The group split up to investigate different areas of the lake, however no unexplained phenomenon was captured.

2nd Floor Corridor

The final vigil of the investigation centred again on the 2nd floor corridor as this was a point where much activity had been reported by other groups.

Although some unexplained orbs were captured during this investigation there was nothing noteworthy which took place at this final location.

Conclusion

For GPRG’s first official public event the evening provided some excellent unexplained phenomenon, notably some E.V.P.’s which can be viewed in the evidence section of the GPRG website.  Everyone who took part experienced some sort of phenomenon whether it was witnessing orbs, involved in the E.V.P. experiments or picking up on strange ‘feelings’.

Woodchester Mansion certainly did not disappoint and will be one of GPRG’s ongoing investigations.
