Woodchester Mansion

 Saturday January 15th 2005

General Details

GPRG’s second investigation was carried out on Saturday 15th Jan 2005.  Many of the original group came back, accompanied by some first time ghost hunters and on this occasion we were also joined by Stroud Paranormal Group.

Equipment used by GPRG during the investigation:

E.M.F. Reader

Laser Thermometer

Digital Recording Device

Aerial Thermometer

Digital Camera

Analogue Dictaphones

2-way radios

Night Vision digital camcorder

The evening began at 8.00pm.  An initial talk was given by myself followed by a protection exercise given by Craig Howley.  The teams were split into smaller groups to begin the individual vigils.

1st & 2nd Floor Corridors

For the first part of the investigation our group split up into two smaller groups.  One group took the first floor/bathroom and the second group took the second floor.  Other than members of the group feeling temperature drops there was nothing paranormal or unexplained picked up at this location.

The Cellar

The vigil of the cellar took place in the vaulted room of the cellar (the largest of the cellar rooms).  On first entering the room many of the group felt the atmosphere had changed from other areas of the building.  The group set up the Dictaphone and John took video using the night vision digital recorder.  A few anomalous orbs were filmed with the digital recorder.

After spending around an hour in this location all members of the group felt that the temperature was getting much colder and many reported that they ‘felt’ someone or something else had entered the room it was at this point that we met up with the other groups in the drawing room to decide on the location for the séance.

Séance in the Cellar

The majority of the groups met in the vaulted room of the cellar to take part in the séance.  The séance was led by GPRG member Craig Howley and after only a short time one of the members of the group started to feel extremely uncomfortable.  This was similar to an experience the same person had felt on GPRG’s previous investigation in October.

The séance continued until this particular member of the group could not carry on.  It was decided at this point that all groups would meet in the drawing room to discuss the events so far.

The Kitchen/Scullery

Back into the smaller groups and my group decided to hold a smaller séance in the kitchen as this was an area said to be recently active on other investigations.  The Dictaphone was set up at one end of the kitchen and I led the séance from the opposite end.  At the end of the séance on listening back through the tape a voice was distinctly heard saying what sounded like Okay very close to the Dictaphone even though no-one was anywhere near it at the time.  This was another good example of E.V.P.’s which seems to be one of the main pieces of evidence picked up during our investigations at Woodchester.

The Chapel and Sacristy

During this part of the investigation an experiment had been set up which had not been used on previous investigations carried out by GPRG – Table Tipping.  One of the former groups had had some very encouraging results from this earlier on in the evening.

We began by each placing our finger tips around the edge of the table and then began to ask questions.  We all took turns in asking the questions and when a certain member of the group asked we seemed to get a response.

Although the table did not move which is what you would hope from table tipping, we seemed to be receiving knocking sounds in response to questions which could be taken as an older type of spirit contact known as table tapping.  The results we obtained from this was very interesting and seemed to be answering direct questions given by one of our members – no other member of the group was making the noises and the answers corresponded to what was being asked.

With the results obtained from both my group and Craigs, table tipping/tapping is certainly something we will continue to investigate on our vigils.

The Laundry

This point of the investigation centred around a previously un-investigated areas of the mansion.  Only three of us took part in this vigil which lasted approximately 60 minutes.  The laundry room feels a very strange location.  On entering the laundry you feel completely isolated from the rest of the mansion, you can not hear anything else going on even though it is not far from the other locations being investigated.  One of the members of the group felt extremely uncomfortable in the laundry and out of all the areas investigated that night disliked this one the most.

Conclusion

Again Woodchester Mansion lived up to its reputation with some excellent examples of E.V.P.’s being obtained.  With the experiences gathered by the groups with the table tipping/tapping as well as some of the evidence gathered on digital video makes Woodchester one of the best examples of a paranormally active location.

GPRG will be visiting Woodchester again to continue this ongoing investigation.
