Ram Investigation May 2005

In conjunction with G.P.R.G

Report By SCFR Member Peter Mould

An interesting return to the Ancient Ram Inn, Wotton under Edge for SCFR who were kindly invited by Gloucestershire Paranormal Research Group.

We started in the Bishops room, hoping for a repeat of the Orb phenomenon we experienced on investigation one. Some orbs were reported by some members of the group on camcorder, and having reviewed my footage I also recorded 14 plus light anomalies although I have to say I think all are explainable as dust or what seems to be an errant moth doing circuits around the room!

A séance was held with all but me linking hands. I wanted to make sure nothing was missed outside the circle.  Suddenly the far side of the circle reported a very strong smell of burning. This seemed to pass around the circle, although the two guys from the Brighton group didn’t smell anything.  I eventually smelt a struck match like aroma from where I was sat.  It was interesting, especially as a girl from an invited public group had reported that her eyes were getting "really hot" just before this burning smell. Nothing else happened at this point.

Vigil 2, The Witches Room

In the witches room, there were some planks of wood stood up in the corner, and three times one of these fell, nearly hitting some of the group. The weird thing was the first time it nearly hit one particular guy, and then as they were telling me about it, it happened again to the same chap. As you can see from the picture on the left, there is a light anomaly on the left arm of the guy to the left of the picture.

After 30 mins we decided to try some table tipping, which proved to be unsuccessful, but during this experiment the plank fell again, narrowly missing those sat on the bed. I checked the floor boards running under this position, and jumped up and down, but the planks only moved very slightly, not enough to fall. I think this goes into the interesting category.

Dave and Craig from the GPRG had good results with the table tipping in this room later on in the night.

Vigil 3, The Attic

We then split into two groups, one in the barn led by Chris, and one in the attic, led by myself. This is when Dave and Craig stayed in the witches’ room and did the table tipping. Sadly the attic was uneventful, except for the howling wind, and a general consensus that we didn’t like the feeling of the area.  I wonder how much this comes down to the fact we were in an old attic, just like the ones that are in all the good ghost stories.  Having said that one of the guys from A Brighton group, who also joined us, had earlier reported seeing red orbs in the bedroom off of the attic, with the naked eye, so this area might warrant a concentrated investigation at some point.

Vigil 4, The Bishops Room

We later returned to the Bishops Room, and tried some more table tipping. This time there was limited movement so it was suggested we use an upturned glass tumbler, this proved the highlight of the night as the glass started to move. Having reviewed my tape of this exercise the glass didn’t seem to me to be being pushed by anyone. In fact later Chris pushed it and the table went as well proving that if anyone had pushed the glass the table would have fallen over.

We linked with a male spirit who claimed to be named Henry and said that he owned the Ram and worked there.  He claimed the year was before 1815, which may have meant his birth date, and that he died in the room.  Somebody killed him, a friend. He said he had 6 children, and was older than 50. However we asked if he was playing with us and not telling us the truth and he said yes. He said he was grounded and resident at the Ram. I wondered if it was a malevolent spirit trying to deceive us. In fact later questioning him about his name he then said it was foreign and beginning with SV.  It was interesting, but as always with this type of communication, it asks more questions than it answers.

Further investigation has uncovered a Henry Dauncey who owned the Ram 1842 – 1849 so this adds to the intrigue.  gloucestershirepubs.co.uk
